The History of Gilley’s in Texas
In 1971, a country musician by the name of Mickey Gilley decided to open a Texas roadhouse honky-tonk and rodeo under his last name. Partnering with a local club owner in Pasadena, Texas Mickey opened the first incarnation of Gilley’s.
Mickey Gilley is a legendary country musician with more than 50 years of music history under his belt. Cousin to the great Jerry Lee Lewis of 1950′s rock and roll fame; Mikey was close to music and musicians all his life. Entering into the music industry on his own right in the late 1950′s, Mickey developed his career and his sound for decades earning himself numerous awards and enough celebrity to launch a very successful club under his brand.
The Gilley’s in Pasadena was once known as “the largest honky-tonk in the world” and in 1980 its world-renowned status garnered Gilley’s the honor of being the venue where the majority of the cinema blockbuster “Urban Cowboy” was filmed. The movie featured Bud, played by John Travolta, as a man who spends his evenings riding the mechanical bull at Gilley’s to impress Sissy, played by Debra Winger.
In 1990, tragedy struck the club and the dance hall portion of Gilley’s burned to the ground. The rodeo portion remained standing until 2005 when it was razed to make way for a school. Fortunately, in 2003 land developers in Dallas, TX made a deal with Mickey Gilley to re-open the club in a new location. Gilley’s Dallas was born out of the old Schepp’s milk bottling factory just South of downtown Dallas, TX.
Now a multi-venue complex encompassing more than 90,000 sq ft, Gilley’s Dallas features 7 unique event spaces, 4 of which are live music venues and a restaurant called The Jack Daniel’s Saloon. The restaurant proudly displays the mechanical bull from Urban Cowboy, El Torro, providing a photo opportunity for tourists. While the modern incarnation of Gilley’s still features mechanical bull rides, live country music and other concerts; most of the entertainment complex’s business now comes from conventions and other corporate events in Dallas.
Mickey Gilley makes very few professional appearances these days, but remains loved and respected by the country music community. The world famous club he founded continues his legacy today, proudly displaying his name in giant neon letters over Texas highway 30 and the South Dallas landscape.
Gilley’s Dallas is located less than a quarter mile from the Dallas Convention Center, bringing the venue a lot of attention from convention attendees and tourists visiting Dallas. Relocating to London for Work
A few weeks ago, my husband got the job offer of a lifetime. We will be relocating to London in just three weeks. I run a small business, and am lucky that I can work anywhere.
