How Anti-Inflammatory Medication Affects Bunions

Though the idea of using over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medications seems like a simple enough concept, it is often a missed step when it comes to swollen bunions or tailor’s bunion. Anti-inflammatory medication can be taken occasionally, if there is swelling and pain in the ligaments that surround the joint, or if you are finding it difficult to move the toe.

By the same token, it is important to note that anti-inflammatory medications only work as often as they are being taken. Over use of this type of medication can be toxic to kidneys, the abdominal region and ears. So if there is persistent swelling around the bunion or tailor’s bunion, it may be a red flag for you to see a podiatrist.

Experts agree a natural anti-inflammatory diet may be a great way to ward off inflammation, arthritis, aid in weight management, as well as heart disease. This includes eating omega 3 fatty acids that come either from fish or fish oil vitamins and walnuts. Other foods include lean protein like chicken and whole grains such as, brown rice and bulgur wheat.
